The schools of magic fall in to the greater categories found above. Schools on opposite ends of the spectrum are unable to be mastered by one person. For example, one may not master both Transmutation and Illusionary magic, those schools being opposite of one another in nature. One may not master both the schools of Life & Death magic. However, for all such rules, there are notable exceptions in history. Notable Ascendant Mages: Barroth, The Eternal One, Master of both Life & Death magic, the first Archmage of Iberith. Proceeded seven generations past by Yul Yassin (Non-Ascendant mage) Selussa Ilicyne, The Materialist, Master of both Material and some Ethereal magics, as well as an adept in Necromancy, Former lady of Ebonmore and widow of Leomaris Ilicyne. Pharos, The Lich Enslaver of Gods, Master of Ethereal, Material, Death, and Life magics, A Lich that sacrificed the lives of millions to attain the power to enslave Vyris for a full month, subduing the growing season and subsequently the forces of life. Defeated by Jura, Champion of Blue, the greatest warrior to date.

Wait so if we aren't allowed to use magics on the opposing ends of the spectrum, how does that make it alright with the notables in roleplay history?
Also, why are there so many of them? Does this contradict that rule of not being able to use opposing magics or is it just for roleplay reasons?

All those people are freaks of nature, theoretically probably being people that were endowed with near god levels of essence for whatever reason, which is what makes them ascendant. They defy the rules of nature.
