So, taking a page from J.R.R Tolkien's dragons, as well as Dragon lore from other servers and Game of Thrones, I've thought that perhaps we could do with a little Dragon lore of our own.
"Dragons... kings of ash and flame, bringers of death and destruction, bearers of an endless legacy... they are the ultimate manifestations of the elements. Fire, Water, Earth, Wind, Light, and Darkness... they embody the fullness of the elements that they represent. It is said that the Aspects are wary of their power, as it is something that they cannot control. The Dragons slumber beneath the earth, within starlight and below ancient waters. Each contains power enough to fell a God, each contains power enough to challenge an Aspect... I fear them, I worship them... and I search for them."
-Vulkhan, Prince of the Aerdrake, Possessor of the Undying Flame
Origins:
After the gods transcended, they recognized that the magical elements needed to be protected. And so they forged the Gems of Power, each one imbued with the essence of the element chosen to inhabit it. Fire, Water, Wind, Earth, Light, and Darkness, each one's purest essence contained in a Gem. The Gods protected these gems for eons, keeping them away from the greedy clutches of their mortal kin. But the power surging through the gems could not simply be contained, it needed to feel alive, it needed the open air and the endless waters, the hottest fire and the deepest cave. And so the essences within the gems forged protective layers around themselves, eggs covered in scales imbued with the power of their element. The Gems of Power became the focal point through which the elemental essences could be channeled, and so became the hearts of the six great Dragons. The gems began to beat like a mortals heart, and from the eggs came hatchlings. Within each hatchling lay a Gem of Power, fueling the life and the elemental fire within. At first the hatchlings were small, and they curled about the feet of the Gods, as a dog would lay up against his master. But soon, the Dragons grew and grew, they became beasts of immense power, soaring through the open air as a testament to the power of the Gods.
Era of the Dragons:
The Era of the Dragons lasted for nearly 2,000 years, during which the Dragons were allowed to roam free, doing as they wished. This didn't always end well, for while some of the Dragons were kind and gentle, others were full of fire and wrath
Half of the Dragons: Fire, Darkness, Earth, wanted to cause destruction and chaos wherever they went. The other dragons: Water, Wind, Light, wanted to help the mortals who were terrorized by the other Dragons. During the Era of the Dragons, there were a number of mortal kingdoms that worshiped and followed the dragons into battle. In one such battle, the Dragons of Light and Darkness clashed above two kingdoms which worshiped them. The mortal armies were nothing compared to the wrath of the two Dragons, and within minutes the entire battlefield was a charred wasteland, thousand of soldiers and their kings slaughtered. The Dragons of Light and Darkness wounded each other, Light's brother gouging out his left eye.
The pain and destruction of the wars caused by these Dragons was so great, that the mortals cried out in prayer to the Gods, begging them to end the scourge which plagued them. Qyftarr and the others listened to the prayer of the mortals, and the Gods cast a mighty spell on the Dragons, placing them each into an endless sleep. The Gods placed the slumbering Dragons into places deep beneath the earth, where no light shines and where no mortal would ever dare go.
Current Significance of the Dragons: For all their power and wisdom, the Gods could not simply curse the dragons to an eternal sleep, for their conscience would not allow it. And so the Gods, in their compassion and mercy, fashioned keys to their prisons, keys forged of the very essences which the Dragons commanded. It is said that the Gods only saw fit to grant such a key to one race, the Aerdrake, descendants of the Dragons, forged of a lesser essence by the Dragon of Fire.
The Gods gave the Aerdrake the key to the Fire Dragon's prison. The Undying Flame, a single flame that never went out, bound in a cage of gold and silver, and it was guarded closely by their royalty.
It is said that if the Gods deem an individual worthy enough, they will grant a Prison Key to the him. For any one person to hold the power of an entire element in their hands... it makes them almost as powerful as a God. The Prison Keys not only grant the bearer the power to awaken the sleeping Dragon, they also grant them the power to place the Dragon in endless sleep once more. The five other Prison keys are guarded solely by the Gods, and only if an individual is pure and worthy enough, may he receive one of the five...
