At the moment it's like 4am and i'm fueled by pizza, ginger ale, and madness. I'm "tired" but my head's abuzz still with thoughts so i put them down to paper (so to speak) and want to fling it past others. its mostly an idea where my current character Oratar the Golem came from along with a possible origin point for other golem players to crop up once the golem "race" is finalized to be a thing. Being the only golem is neat but maybe other players would like to see what it's like to be one too maybe? again, idea and suggestion mostly with still a nice "eerie fable" that could fit in the world somewhere.
A faction of Dwarves in the early years of Caeda were renowned practitioners of Golemancy and craftsmen of magical machinery. Unfortunately their great status gave them hubris and a smug outlook on the other races and even on fellow dwarves who were lacking knowledge or skill with metalworking and some degree of engineering. Their craft was a trade "family" secret and not even a whisper left their lips on how they mastered such works. When the surface world started to grow hostile and war spread wide, they decided that their group alone would flee to safety which meant down into unreachable depths. Eventually lost to history they stayed in their self imposed exile and grew their golemancy and engineering to an insane caliber... but now none remain to share the secrets or to savor the accomplishments they developed. Years of stale dust ridden air and rare/unknown fungus and mold spores took their toll on the dwarven people, horrible illnesses and ailments thinned the gene pool until inbreeding and death were their only courses of action. Then one forgotten dwarven soul enacted a terrible beacon of hope for his family and friends, his remaining companions and the surviving souls. A final machine was born to keep their work alive, their ego from dying in their own tomb. The design; unknown. The purpose; forgotten. The function; unclear. No mortal alive or undead dared to venture to what few who know of it as "The Vault", only golems keep it now. The Vault's lay out is unknown or changing to suit the needs it has within. Golems roam like ants of a colony, repairing tunnels or replacing them for efficiency sake. Popular theory is that "The Unknown Machina", name given to the final machine made within The Vault, acts like a hive mind or ant to the golems within to keep each linked magically and focused on maintenance and production. Few reports speak of golems transporting materials into a structure with an unpleasant glow and a harsh chill in the air. If the structure is the Machina or not is hard to say, but it's agreed to be where golems are produced as new golems wander out after an eerie wailing is heard before the glowing fades and the chill intensifies briefly.
The Vault is considered a very hostile location; golems are on a constant patrol and some are hidden in walls either acting as support or security. Other constructs are also littered throughout with ranged attacks and alarms, triggering hidden golems and focusing local ones to any invader's location. The golems are never known to take survivors as all scouts, explorers or fools are never seen again before relaying any means of a report via crystal ball. Entry is taxing enough as the routes down are long and littered with monsters as expected before finding tunnels and caverns laced with silverfish and other traps before golem patrols start to become significant. The air is considered toxic with mold and dust, no food supplies to scavenge from beyond mushrooms and your own rations. Any water is toxic from byproduct of golemancy production or some other unknown waste.
On rare occasion, only witnessed by 2 scouts before contact was lost, a rogue golem can be produced or one has an unusual malfunction, both cases are then seen to exit The Vault and wandering off to locate an "Impera" to serve and protect before further instability causes internal damage which eventually results in the golem either self destructing or crumbling into rubble. The remains always beyond salvage for study on how these advanced beings function or are produced. A golem's "life span" is nearly impossible to gauge as so many roam the Vault and tracking a single golem from production to either malfunction or decommission has been fruitless with each scout often becoming lost by various means or unable to safely observe one with enough supplies. Fortunately golems are slow and unable to manipulate mana, so even if a golem was constructed with a "Ranger Unit" in mind, they are unable to preform the same feats as their mortal counter part. Obviously they require no food and nearly never rest. They brandish by far the most strength of any of the known races and durability/endurance surpassing any of the known races. A noted possible weakness however is that they avoid water and seem to prioritize building dams or new water ways to avoid having to build around or in damp or moist areas. One lucky scout was able to report an escape by means of diving into an underground river and following it down stream before diving toward a cavern for safety (same scout later reported various symptoms of poisoning after the swim however). Vault Golems do not communicate but a few rogue golems have been known to attempt communication, often using big words and carrying a rough direct tone with anyone they address in a very autonomous fashion. So far, only 1 has been known to survive it's journey to the surface before finding it's Impera, Eliseris' guardian Oratar. How long until it fully malfunctions or degrades into disrepair is unknown, even more so how it would react to such a state of its own being. Vault Golems that have signs of degradation have been seen returning to the production structure for possible repairs, so it's unknown what fate awaits this lone golem...
